Air Freight
Air Freight to Jamaica
Air freight is the option when a shipment cannot wait for a sailing. Ocean freight moves the overwhelming majority of cargo between the United States and Jamaica and it is the more economical choice for almost everything — but some shipments are urgent, perishable, high-value or simply too important to sit on the water. Shore to Shore Shipping arranges air freight from the United States to Jamaica alongside our ocean services, with the same offices in Kingston and Montego Bay handling the arrival.
When Air Freight Is Worth It
Air freight costs more than ocean freight for the same goods — that is the honest starting point, and for a barrel of household supplies it is rarely the right answer. What air buys you is time, and there are shipments where time is the whole point.
- Urgent replacement parts where equipment is standing idle until they arrive.
- Perishable goods with a shelf life measured in days.
- High-value items where the shorter transit reduces the time at risk.
- Documents and samples needed for a deadline.
- Stock that has to be on a shelf before a specific date.
Air Freight vs Ocean Freight
The decision is usually a straight trade between transit time and cost, but two other differences matter. Air freight is priced with far more attention to weight — dense, heavy cargo is disproportionately expensive to fly, while the same weight in a container is comparatively cheap. And air cargo is subject to tighter restrictions on what may travel, particularly anything classed as hazardous, aerosols and certain liquids and batteries.
A practical middle path is to split a shipment: fly the part that is genuinely urgent, and let the rest follow by sea. Tell us the deadline and we will tell you whether it needs air at all.
Check before you pack
Restrictions on air cargo are stricter than on ocean freight, and some everyday items are affected. Our prohibited and restricted items guide is a good first check, and we will confirm anything unusual before your shipment is booked.
How an Air Shipment Moves
- You request a quote with the weight, dimensions, contents and the deadline that matters.
- We confirm the goods are acceptable for air carriage and book the shipment.
- Cargo is delivered to, or collected for, our Union, New Jersey office and prepared for the flight.
- The shipment flies to Jamaica, where our Kingston or Montego Bay office receives it.
- Customs clearance is handled and the cargo is released for collection or onward delivery.
What Affects an Air Freight Quote
Air freight is priced on chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight and a volumetric figure derived from the dimensions — so a light but bulky shipment can price like a much heavier one. The nature of the goods, any special handling or temperature requirements, how quickly it must move, and the duties payable on arrival all affect the final figure.
