A barrel to Jamaica is usually a care package — the foods, household goods, and supplies a family back home needs. But not everything belongs in one, and some items will hold up the whole shipment at customs. This packing list breaks down what you can put in a barrel by category, what to avoid, and where to double-check before you pack. General guidance — verify before you pack
Customs rules change, and some items need permits even when they are not outright banned. Use this list as a starting point, then confirm against Jamaica Customs Agency and Jamaica Trade Board guidance for anything unusual. When in doubt, leave it out.
Food and Groceries (the most common contents)
Non-perishable food is the heart of most barrels. Stick to shelf-stable, packaged, and canned goods that will survive weeks in a container without spoiling or leaking.
- Canned goods — canned meats, fish, vegetables, beans, fruit, evaporated milk.
- Dry staples — rice, flour, sugar, cornmeal, oats, dried beans, pasta.
- Bottled and jarred goods — cooking oil, sauces, condiments, honey, peanut butter (tape lids and bag them).
- Boxed and packaged foods — cereal, crackers, cookies, instant noodles, tea, coffee.
- Spices and seasonings — sealed jars and packets.
Avoid perishables
Fresh produce, raw meat, dairy requiring refrigeration, and anything that will spoil over a multi-week ocean transit do not belong in a barrel. They will rot, leak, and may cause the barrel to be held or destroyed.
Household and Cleaning Supplies
- Cleaning products — detergent, bleach, dish soap, disinfectant (double-bag and stand upright).
- Paper goods — paper towels, toilet paper, tissues.
- Kitchen and bath basics — sealed soaps, sponges, trash bags.
- Small home items — lightweight plasticware, basic tools, batteries.
Clothing and Linens
New clothing and linens ship easily and are great for filling gaps between heavier items. Used clothing can be restricted or require a sanitation declaration — check current Jamaica Customs requirements before packing used garments in quantity.
School, Office, and Medical Supplies
- School supplies — notebooks, pencils, pens, backpacks, calculators.
- Over-the-counter medicines — sealed, in original packaging, in reasonable personal quantities (large quantities can look commercial and trigger scrutiny).
- First-aid basics — bandages, antiseptic, vitamins.
Medicines and restricted health items
Personal-use over-the-counter medicines in sealed packaging are usually fine in small quantities. Prescription medicines and larger quantities may require documentation. Check Jamaica Customs guidance for medicines before shipping.
Small Electronics and Tools
Small electronics and hand tools can ship, but pack them carefully and check for restrictions. Devices with lithium batteries, certain used electronics, and commercial quantities may be restricted or need documentation. Wrap electronics in clothing or bubble wrap and keep them away from the barrel walls.
What NOT to Put in a Barrel
Some items will get the entire barrel held, seized, or fined — even if everything else in it is fine. Before you pack, review the full prohibited and restricted items list.
One bad item holds the whole barrel
